I think that being "good" or "evil" is something that is learned or developed over time. You might be in a bad situation as a child, but you can still make your life better. On the other hand, you can grow up in a good and caring family, but you can end up "evil." Experiences can also have major impact on people's views on life.
One of my best friends from my old school is a good example. As a child, she was a very kind person, would never hurt a fly. But as she grew older, she had a lot of emotional trauma. She now is one of those students that is either in detention, or suspended. Her parents are still trying to help as best they can.
Oprah grew up in a very bad situation. She bounced around homes, and was abused. But that did not stop her. She has now dedicated her life to help others. Her past did not keep her from doing all the good that she has accomplished.
My final example is J. J. Maloney. He was a convicted murder. While in prison, however, he saw the light and began to educate himself. When released from prison, he became a journalist who was nominated for five Pulitzer Prizes.
