Inherent Goodness
I do not think that people are inherently good or bad. I think that the reasons people are good or bad depend on the situation they are in. Many people begin out good, but as time passes they can get more and more evil. Lord of the Flies proves that you are not necessarily born a certain way because the characters changed throught the span of the novel. In the beginning Jack was not able to hunt and kill just a little pig. Twords the end of the novel he took part in beating Simon to death, and not have remorse for it. He changed because of the enviornment and living situations. He had to hunt to survive and it made him bad, he wasn't always a bad person. Also in Lord of the Flies Roger is a good example as well. In the beginning he was really good, calm, and quiet. As the novel progressed he got worse and worse. Twords the end of the novel he was the sole person that killed piggy. He pulled the lever that dropped the rock that killed piggy, alone. The enviornmental factors played a role in his becoming bad, he wasn't born that way. In the real world a good example would be Adolf Hitler. He was born into a good family who tried to teach their kids right from wrong. When he got out on his own into the world he began to turn bad. The people he was with could have influenced him to turn into the bad person he was. He wasn't born evil, he was a good child.

I agree, most people start out good but they can change with time.
ReplyDeleteI like how you used that Jack couldn't kill a little pig but over time he was an accomplice to 2 more deaths of actual people. I also agree with how you said that people are influenced and it just matters what type of situation they're in that makes them good or bad.
